Education and Young People
The Education and Young People BOOST group is focused on potential developments within education that are complementary to the Olympics with a plan to exploit the opportunities to involve young people in a broad range of activities around the preparations for the Games, their delivery and their legacy.
The terms of reference of the group are:
- maximising educational opportunities
- encouraging and involving young people to develop their potential
- inspiring young people
- developing pathways, through learning and skills, to allow young people to contribute positively to the Games
The group wish to develop a number of key messages which we can overlay on already-planned ambassadorial activities and sports events in order to connect the Olympic spirit with the pursuit of achievement in the educational ‘arena’. The Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius (Swifter, Higher, Stronger) carries a message which reinforces and resonates with other messages, such as ‘Aim Higher’. The focus of the group is therefore on educational participation and not just sporting excellence and there is an expectance to engage with young people who are inspired by sporting endeavour but may not themselves be highly skilled in this area.
The group is currently planning to take a mixed-ability group of local young people to the Beijing games (Olympic or Paralympic) and to develop this group thereafter into a group of ambassadors around the theme of ‘Rising to the Challenge’.
