Making the most of the 2012 Games - DCMS Legacy Action Plan

The DCMS have published their Legacy Action Plan for 2012.  The plan focuses on the long-term benefits emanating from the hosting of the 2012 Games.  It expands on “Our Promise for 2012” (DCMS, June 2007) which suggested five key areas (see news article) where London and the UK can exploit the opportunity of hosting the World’s most important sporting event.

The areas of the report of particular interest to the Further and Higher Education sectors are broad.  Two of the key Legacy priorities identified in the plan aim to ensure that ‘young people are playing a part in communities’ and to create ‘more jobs’.  Train to Gain is a flagship initiative, seeking to increase the productivity of employers and training institutions via 2012 specific contracts.  Through work with national governing bodies, local authorities, colleges and universities the strategy seeks to increase Participation in Sport particularly among the current ‘drop-off’ age group (16-19).  Creative and Media Industries is another focal point.  Skillset have committed to provide 1,200 trained workers through a new broadcast training programme.  The Creative and Cultural Skills Academy will develop a nationwide group of “London 2012” apprentices, as well as establishing a specialist training network for the theatre and music sectors involving employers and training providers from the FE and HE sectors.
