Step into Sport Awards

An important element of Step into Sport Community Volunteering is the Step into Sport Awards. These awards provide an opportunity for you, as a  volunteer in your local community, to gain the recognition that you deserve for your valuable contribution to volunteering. There are two ways that Step into Sport Community Volunteering Awards will be presented in 2008/09 which are detailed below.

The Youth Sport Trust recognises your contribution to community volunteering by awarding nationally recognised certificates dependent on the number of hours you volunteer;

 

Youth Sport Trust - BRONZE AWARD - 50 hours

Youth Sport Trust - SILVER AWARD - 100 hours

Youth Sport Trust - GOLD AWARD - 200 hours

 

New for this year is the DAME KELLY HOLMES DOUBLE GOLD AWARD for 400 hours volunteering! The award can be acheived by completing 400 hours in your community placement or 200 hours school based volunteering + 200 hours community based volunteering.

 team BEDS&LUTON will award those whose contribution to community volunteering deserves special recognition.

At the end of each school term Step into Sport mentors are invited to nominate a young volunteer they feel has made a significant contribution in their volunteer placement.

To be eligible for nomination the young volunteer must be actively volunteering in a community placement and registered and using the Step into Sport online passport.

team BEDS&LUTON will select a volunteer from the nominations whose contribution will be recognised on our website. This young volunteer will receive the team BEDS&LUTON Step into Sport Award!

MARCH AWARDS

The team BEDS&LUTON Step into Sport Awards were presented at the Step into Sport Conference at the University of Bedfordshire. From the nominations received team BEDS&LUTON carefully selected the individual that they thought deserved to receive the Step into Sport prize... 

 

Congratulations to NIKKI COLE...

Nikki in her role a Sports Ambassador has supported her mentor in establishing a community Netball club which competes in the local heritage league. Since November Nikki has taken on the role of team secretary and assisted with the recruitment of umpires. Nikki has attended the AENA Beginners Unpires AAward course and gained experience umpiring partenrship school festivals, she has also begun to umpire club league and cup games.The Step into Sport programme has presented a significant challenge and without Nikki's enthusiasm and commitment the club would not have arrived at this point.

 

JUNE AWARDS

The nominations received for the June Step into Sport awards clearly demonstrated the fantastic contribution that the young volunteers of Bedfordshire and Luton are making to community sport...

 

 Congratulations to HANNAH SOUTHAM and RYAN UNDERWOOD...

After much deliberation team BEDS&LUTON were unable to choose between these two excellent nominations, and therefore decided to award both volunteers with the Step into Sport award for June. 

 

Hannah has been volunteering at Grangers Netball club developing her skills in coaching and officiating. This season Hannah has worked with a group of year seven children helping them to develop their skills and abilities. Hannah has also coached a team at the local sunday morning junior league. The group of players Hannah has worked with this season have become well integrated and the attendance has been increasing. As well as her volunteering at the Netball club, Hannah has been helping out at her local dance club supportiing children from aged 3-8. Hannah has been full of enthusiasm and encouragement for the very young dancers and has even been seen on stage helping them to perform in front of an audience!! Hannahs community volunteering hours were at 237 at the time of print (and rising).

 

Ryan took on the Step into Sport programme at the start of this year and has emerged as a highly motivated individual. Ryan has assisited Flitwick Eagles FC with coaching sessions, but since the end of the season has made himself readily available to assist with school clubs and partnership activities. Ryan also recently completed his FA Level 1 qualification as part of the Step into Sport programme.

JANUARY 2009 AWARDS

The nominations received for the January 2009 Step into Sport awards clearly demonstrated the fantastic contribution that the young volunteers of Bedfordshire and Luton are making to community sport. The nominations accounted for volunteering that had been completed as part of hte Step into Sport programme in the autumn term, September 2008 - December 2008...

 

  Congratulations to DANIEL DAY

team BEDS&LUTON received some fantastic nominations from the young volunteers mentors for the January awards. After much consideration the panel decided that Daniel Day should be awarded the team BEDS&LUTON Step into Sport Award for January. Congratulations to Daniel for his commitment to his volunteering.  

Daniel has been volunteering at Bedford Hockey club, the University of Bedfordshire and within his school. As well as his volunteering Daniel has taken it upon himself to complete coach education courses to futher his skills and knowledge. To date Daniel has 50.25 hours verified on the Step into Sport online passport and is currently looking to start another volunteer placement with Flitwick Cricket club. 

 

 From the other nominations received for the January awards team BEDS&LUTON were impressed with the commitment other young volunteers had been giving to their volunteering and therefore decided these volunteers should also be highlighted:

Jamie Cheung, Kieran Clayson, Matthew Wright - Biggleswade Badminton club, Caldecote Football club, Gamlingay FC.

MAY 2009 AWARDS

The nominations received for the County Step into Sport Award for the volunteering completed in the spring term, January - April, yet again demonstrated the excellent contribution our young volunteers are making to sports volunteering and community sports clubs...

 

Congratulations to JOANNA MAYES

Joanna has made a significant contribution to local sport and the community sports clubs where she has volunteered. Joanna has gained valuable experience coaching young people at Caldecote Football club and also managing Gamlingay U10B football team where she has been responsible for training, match days and administration. During the spring term, with seven of her peers, Joanna supported her School Sport Coordinator to provide tag rugby coaching in local lower schools, cluminating in the organisation of a festival for 120 Yr 3/4 pupils. Joanna has also supervised young people playing football in the community as part of a project led by NACRO where she has completed her V50 award for the Vinspired young volunteer scheme. Joanna is also involved with supporting the police in their 'safer neighbourhood scheme' in Biggleswade. To date Joanna has accrued 112 hours as part of her Step into Sport volunteering. Many congratulations must go to Joanna on receiving this award and good luck with her future volunteering! 

 

JULY 2009 AWARDS

 

Congratulations to MEGAN HODGKINS

Megan was one of the first to sign up to this year’s Step into Sport program at Sharnbrook Upper School, yet has been volunteering and leading throughout her time within school.  Megan has set up and delivered events and assemblies into lower schools, helping to inspire the next generation of young leaders.  Megan has built up her experience within Graingers Netball club and has attended all events and sessions that have been put in place with the Leadership Academy acruing over 80 hours of volunteering along the way.  She is always willing to make suggestions as to how an event or an activity can be improved upon and has a natural talent for Leadership. Megan often goes above and beyond the expectations of those around her and is always at the forefront of any activity.
