Get Back Into Rounders Team wins Tournament in Luton!
On Saturday the 8th of May 2010, in association with the Luton Borough Council Take 3 4 Life Event, Rounders England delivered a hugely successful ‘Rounders in the Park Community Tournament’ at Wardown Park.
Despite some very unpleasant weather conditions, four local teams took part in the event. Nearly forty people got involved throughout the day and all enjoyed playing some very exciting and competitive Rounders in the centre of Luton.
Participating teams came from a variety of different groups, including staff from Luton Borough Council, members of the Rampage Carnival Club, and the newly created Redborne Rounders Team – formed following a successful ‘Get Back Into Rounders Project’ run throughout the winter at Redborne Upper School in partnership with team BEDS&LUTON.
All of the teams played against each other in a round-robin competition throughout the afternoon, with some excellent all-round performances. At the end of the group stage the Redborne Rounders team topped the table with a flawless unbeaten record and the Rampage Carnival boys finished a very close second. These two teams then battled it out in an exceptionally tight final: the Redborne Rounders team displayed some strong hitting and tactical running to post a score of 6 rounders in the first innings, and the Rampage Carnival Club fell tantalisingly close in reply with 5.
The Redborne Rounders team were therefore duly crowned winners of the first ‘Rounders in the Park’ event in Luton, and were led up to receive their medals by Coach, Robin Osborn.
Beth Wild, Regional Rounders Officer for the East of England, said “This is a fantastic achievement for the Redborne Rounders team and is testament to what can be achieved by running a successful Get back Into Rounders Project”.
The Get Back Into Rounders sessions at Redborne Upper School are continuing throughout the summer on Tuesday evenings, 6.30pm – 7.30pm, until the 29th June 2010.
These sessions are also being run in partnership with team BEDS&LUTON at Russell Park in Bedford on Monday evenings, 6.30pm – 7.30pm, until the 5th July 2010.
And at Icknield High School in Luton on Wednesday evenings, 6.15pm – 7.15pm until 30th June 2010.
