Netball East work hard to ensure that the Competition is not only a fantastic event for schools, players, teachers and spectators, but also an opportunity for umpire and coach development and scouting. Below we speak with just some of the people involved;
Hannah Austin, Teacher - Seevic College, Essex. U19 winners
“The England Netball Schools Competition always proves to be an unknown for the SEEVIC netball team, yet we embraced the day and the unfamiliarity of the teams we faced. With such a high standard of netball, we could not afford to make any mistakes and almost suffered from an unsteady game, however the girls demonstrated an outstanding level of determination producing some of the best netball I have seen all season to battle through a terrific, highly charged semi-final against the consistently good Palmers and then to beat Sharnbrook in the final. The vibe around the courts was one of great sportsmanship and showcased U19’S netball for the East region for what it is - exceptional”
Sue Fenn, Teacher - Icknield High School, Bedfordshire
“Won 2 and lost 4! Our first two losses were fairly close (Notre Dame 3-8, Ipswich 4-9). I think these were mostly due to being overwhelmed with where we were and such. We then beat Perse Girls 9-7, and Gable Hall 8-3, but, I think the saints had it in for us that day (or certainly weren't marching in our direction!!!) as we lost heavily to St Marys and St martins! Despite the results, it was a great day out, very well organised and we wouldn't have missed it for the world! Thanks to all who organised, they even got the weather spot on!”
Justine Saunders - Brentwood School, Essex
"The Under 14 girls thoroughly enjoyed the day, despite sustaining a couple of injuries! They played some outstanding netball and the coaches were all extremely proud of the controlled manner in which they approached each game. The tournament was very well organised and run, which only added to the enjoyment. Bring on the National Finals! Shame they’re in Basildon though – our girls were looking forward to a weekend away!"
Jane Axford - Bedford Girls School, Bedford
"Both our Under 14 and Under 16 teams had a fabulous day and a great experience playing netball against the best schools in the Eastern region. Our Under 16 team were thrilled to reach the National Finals in March and both teams are still talking excitedly about the day.
We would like to thank the organisers and all the officials for an extremely well run tournament."
Rhys David, Umpire
Rhys is a C Umpire, working towards his B Award. He’s been umpiring for 6 years, since the age of 17 and this was his second year at the Regional Schools finals;
“I did a Sports Leadership Award at school and started my Umpiring journey with a Beginner Award course in Suffolk which enabled me to umpire local adult league and youth matches. I then moved onto my C award and am now working towards my B. My overall goal is to become an International Umpire and I know that to get there I need to get as much experience as possible through practice and watching others. Regional Schools is a good experience and gives me the opportunity to umpire a variety of matches, which means it’s more challenging, and I also enjoy working with different umpires. I have a County Mentor who gives me lots of feedback throughout the year, but it’s great to get different feedback from another Mentor today – I’ve had some feedback already which I’m trying to practice and then I’ll get some more at the end of day to take away with me”.
Gill Brook, Umpire
“I got involved in netball when my daughter started playing in lower school and I’ve been a member of Maulden Netball Club for about 11 years. In the early days, I supported with some coaching, although I never took any qualifications. I took my Beginner Umpire Award many years ago, and quite quickly went on to do my C Award, but then I’ve taken a while and a bit of coercing to move on to my B, which I’m now undertaking. I’ve no real desire to move any higher with Umpiring Awards, but would like to move into Mentoring in the future."
“I was encouraged by my County Mentor Bernie Palmer to attend the Regional Schools Competition this year to gain a different experience, to receive additional mentoring and to work alongside other experienced Umpires. I’ve only umpired one game so far but have had some useful feedback on repositioning which I will try and work on now throughout the day”.
