Holly Peck- Netball Versus Strictly!
British Colleges Netball Player
Name: Holly Peck
Age: 17
Born: Cambridge
College: Hills Road Sixth Form, Cambridge
As the Centre in the Hills Road Netball team, how is your season going in the British Colleges league?
So far it has been very positive. We have won all our games except one in the league and we were the winners of the British Colleges East Region Tournament. Now we will be going to the National finals in Loughborough. I am really excited but I am not too sure what to expect. The level of play will be much higher than we have experienced but I am sure we will play the best we can.
What are the main challenges you face as a team and individual?
Learning to work as a team as this season is the first time we have all played together. I personally need to develop ways of concentrating for the whole game as I have moments when I suddenly find my mind drifting away on other things. I am going to try and focus for a longer period in the warm up and get everything else out of my mind.
How do you cope with match day pressure?
The team sits down and everyone voices their opinion and how they feel and this helps me to relieve any tension.
Who has had the biggest influence on your netball?
My Dad. He is always there to support me and as a sportsman, he explains why you need to train, tactics and helps in various situations. Plus, I want to make him proud.
What other sports do you take part in?
I don’t. My life is just netball with a bit of street dance at the moment.
What do you think of Strictly Come Dancing?
I love it! I am so disappointed John Sergeant has left. I fully understand his reasons but I thought he was fun, really entertaining but not the best dancer.
When the programme first appeared on television I took dancing lessons every week for 6 months. Then when Hills Road College went to South Africa in February to visit our partner school we had a cultural day. I taught other students from our college the waltz and we demonstrated the dance in front of whole school.
When I have fewer commitments, I would like to give dancing another go!
What does your boyfriend think of netball?
He was not a massive fan until he saw me play, now he is a keen supporter.
Has netball affected your studies?
It did last year when I was part of the East Regional Talent Development programme and playing for Comberton’s regional team, plus helping out at junior netball training and events. I have had to cut back as this is a very important year for my studies and my ‘A’ level exams.
How will you feel when the College team disbands at the end of the year?
It will be very sad when we leave but I hope the team members will all stay in touch. I know it sounds like a cliché but it has been like one big family.
What’s next in your netball career?
I want to carry on enjoying my netball and hopefully play for my University before I consider if I want to take my netball any further by trialling for a Superleague squad.
