FAQs

What is the School Games?

The School Games is a key Government priority for realising a meaningful sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is supported by three Government Departments - Department for Education, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, and the Department of Health - with funding from Sport England, through the National Lottery. The School Games underline this Government's commitment to providing a new approach to competitive school sport designed to motivate and enthuse all young people.

How can the School Games support my students?

At first sight the School Games may appear to be just a structured 4 level competition framework, but it can be a catalyst to drive whole school improvement by developing creative and innovative approaches adding value to existing good practice.

The School Games brings to life the sporting spirit values thus allowing schools to maximise the impact of all competition as a stimulus for personal best, raised aspirations and opportunities for those aspirations to become reality.

Make sure your school is involved by registering now. By registering you will receive resources to help run the School Games in your school.

How do I get involved?

1. Register your school’s interest on this website:

Once you register your interest you will receive a pack to start running the School Games in your school.

2. Involve the whole school:

The School Games should excite and inspire everyone to get involved. Start thinking about how you will work with students, teachers and other staff - and parents - to put the School Games at the heart of school life.

3. Plan your intra-school programme:

Why not bring together a group within your school to plan your intra-school programme for next year? Which sports and formats will you choose? What will your School Games Day look and feel like? It’s time to get planning.

What sports are involved?

There will be around 30 sports for schools to choose from and decide which are best for them to compete in, with more sports and competition formats added as time goes on.

What will be the expectation for inclusion of these sports e.g. do we have to include all 30 and how much flexibility is there?

No, schools do not have to include all the sports – at Level 1 and 2 it will be a school's decision how many sports they offer, but in due course schools that offer a broader range of sports are likely to get enhanced recognition and profile. For information on the sports at Level 3, please refer to the LOC Guidance in the LOC section of this website
