Haynes prove once again to have the Key Steps at this years Gymnastics Festival

The Redborne School Sport Partnership combined with Falcon Gymnastics Club held its Key Steps Gymnastics Festival on the 29th January and 5th February at Flitwick Leisure Centre. 180 pupils from 17 lower schools took part in the festivals.

Key Steps Gymnastics uses a range of moves that are combined together to create a 1.5 minute routine to instrumental music. Key Stage 1 pupils had to use 6 compulsory moves (straddle sit, teddy bear roll, back support, rocking on back, 1 foot stand, stretched jump) joined with 4 moves chosen from the elective moves list. Key Stage 2 pupils had to use 7 compulsory moves (arch, forward roll, front support into press up, 1/2 turn jump, arabesque, broad jump, teddy bear roll) along with 3 elective moves.

Before the pupils competed they were given the opportunity to take part in a range of gymnastics activities including the Airtrack, the box, the trampette and the floor. Young leaders from Parkfields Middle school and Marston Vale Middle school assisted at the festivals. They made sure pupils knew where they were going, encouraged them during the activities and made sure they were ready for their performance.

Falcon Gymnastics Club coaches were present at the festivals to run the activities, score the performance, talent spot and advise pupils of pathways into gymnastics. They also demonstrated their skills at the end of the festival to show pupils what to aspire to.

The Partnership were very pleased to welcome the Mayor of Flitwick Councillor Thompson who attended both days to watch performances and hand out medals.

Congratulations to the winners:

29th January: KS1 – Haynes Lower School
KS2 – Haynes Lower School (Northwood End team)
5th February: KS1 – Church End Lower School
                     KS2 – Roecroft Lower School

Scores from both festivals were compared and the overall winners were Haynes Lower School. They will be invited to go onto represent the Redborne SSP at the County Key Steps Gymnastics festival on the 12th May. Good luck to them.

Thank you to everyone that took part, the standard of gymnastics has certainly improved this year.
