Sportivate
Sportivate will capture the excitement of sport and London 2012 to provide attractive and sustainable sporting opportunities for participants in the sport of their choice within their community.
£32 million of National Lottery Funding (revenue) will be invested in Sportivate with further partnership funding (cash and in-kind) being invested by local partners.
Sportivate will commence in April 2011 and will run for 4 years until March 2015.
The Sportivate programme is part of the Play strand of Sport England’s London 2012 mass participation legacy programme ‘Places People Play’.
Sportivate will be reflective of the Coalition Government’s BIG Society because it will be delivered against a simple national framework but with local flexibility to produce the following outcomes:
- providing a supply chain of sporting activities that will match as well as generate demand
- getting more 14-25s regularly participating in sports activities in the community by responding to their needs and working closely with a range of relevant providers to provide a framework of activities
- focusing on high quality sports providers all operating within robust Safeguarding Standards
- creating more opportunities for the growth and deployment of coaches and volunteers
- increasing take up in leisure centres and other facility stock
- generate close links with clubs to drive more participants to take part and volunteer in National Governing Body (NGB) community sports clubs.
Aims of Sportivate
The overall aim of Sportivate is for 300,000 participants aged 14-25 years to complete weekly coaching sessions over the four years with two in five of them, 120,000, carrying on playing sport regularly. (Bedfordshire and Luton retained targets as follows:
Year 1 = 681; Year 2 = 909; Year 3 = 909; Year 4 = 909)
The programme will target people who are not currently choosing to participate regularly in sport in their own time or are participating but for a limited amount of time, and will support them to continue playing sport in their community after the 6-8 weeks of the Sportivate weekly coaching sessions are up.
County Sports Partnership Role
The major role of CSPs will be to pull together the work of various agencies and be responsible for the delivery of the programme. This will involve a planning and implementation process that will lead to ‘joined up’ and integrated delivery for people across the sporting agenda. A critical role for CSPs will be to identify providers (e.g. the NGBs of sport) that offer high quality and sustainable activities for young people.
Each CSP will:
- Support and drive the creation of a Sportivate Plan
- Oversee and monitor the delivery of the Sportivate Plan
Delivery Process
There are three sections to each of the projects delivered through Sportivate.
- Participant Intelligence – to ensure that projects are taking place based on supplying a demand from the participants.
- Weekly Coaching Sessions - this is the start of the Sportivate offer and will be a series of weekly coaching sessions in the chosen sport lasting no less than 6 weeks (and a maximum of 8 weeks). The deliverer of the sessions will be community focused. The sessions will be participant (or customer) led in that they will be affordable, accessible, appropriate and attractive.
- Sustainability/Exit Route - at the end of the weekly coaching sessions participants will be supported into a local club or alternative sports provision.
So how do we get involved?
The exact detail on how and where the programme is to be delivered is still being finalised by team BEDS&LUTON (tBL) as part of our preliminary submission to Sport England.
However we can share with you our initial plans:
- An indicative funding allocation will be allocated to each Local Authority area to ensure a fair and consistent spread of projects (this calculation is based on 14-25 population data).
- Local Authorities and SSPs will be a key delivery partner to shape and decide on projects that are delivered on their patch.
- NGBs/Schools/Local Authority partners/ Community Sports Clubs can submit expressions of interest (when live) directly to tBL who will in turn consult with the relevant Local Authority to ensure a joined up approach and avoid duplication.
- NGBs can and should urge clubs to submit expression of interest (when live) directly to tBL.
- tBL will use the existing GET BACK INTO brand to commission new activity in new sports (appealing to the 16-25 age group) where appropriate.
- Delivery will start in May 2011 using existing delivery providers and initial proposals received from interested NGBs and partners.
- Partners will be consulted and receive updates and communication on the Sportivate programme via the usual channels (website;1 to 1 meetings with tBL Officers; e-zines; Sports Development Forums; County Networking Day – Next date is 16th March 2011
As the planning process develops we will communicate further information on the process and delivery model for Sportivate in Bedfordshire & Luton.
