BOOST Disability Sports Club

This week, new disability sport community club Boost opened its doors at All Saints Academy, Dunstable to all 8-18 year olds and their siblings in the county with learning difficulties and physical disabilities. Boost, a multi sports club, has been funded through Sports Unlimited, a government funded project that aims get 900,000 additional young people engaged within extra-curricular sport by 2011. Boost is also backed by Sporting champions, a Sport England initiative who provide Champions of international sport to projects to build long-term sustainable relationships with young people and provide inspiration. Boost has taken many months of work to put together, following consultation with parents across the south of Bedfordshire regarding the sporting opportunities currently available in the area. Sporting Champion & 800m Paralympic Gold Medallist, Tim Prendergast, worked with community coach Robin Osborn to run the 1st session this week consisting of team games and Dodgeball & also included an opportunity for the children to speak to Tim and hold his Gold Medal. Pete Hardy, Sports Development Manager at Team Beds & Luton said ‘ Both nationally and locally, disabled young people are underrepresented in sport, largely due to the lack of opportunities available to them. It is great to see a new project offering more activities specifically for these youngsters. All involved appeared to be having a wonderful time & I look forward to this project going from strength to strength as word gets out.’ Boost is based at All Saints Academy, who have facilitated the club, on a Thursday evening from 6-7pm. The next session will take place on the 19th November – we would love to see more young people along.
