Primary PE & Sport Premium

The premium must be spent by schools on making additional and sustainable improvements to the provision of PE and sport for the benefit of all pupils to encourage the development of healthy, active lifestyles. The Secretary of State does not consider the following expenditure as falling within the scope of additional or sustainable improvement:

  • employing coaches or specialist teachers to cover planning preparation and assessment (PPA) arrangements - these should come out of schools' core staffing budgets
  • teaching the minimum requirements of the national curriculum PE programmes of study - including those specified for swimming

The Phase 5 mapping for the Primary Premium Funding has just begun with the annual survey sent to all schools to complete by 16th May. There is a new focus this year which is type of sports schools are doing – is it traditional or is there a move towards 'new' sports? We are also looking at the health agenda and asking about impact of the funding over the past year. The results from the survey monkey will be collated and analysed by the Beds & Luton Primary PE Premium Funding team. The information will then be compiled into a Local Intelligence report that will be sent off to Sport England. They require information on how schools are spending their money against key areas – coaches working in schools, competitions, health and well-being, use of PE Specialists, equipment, facilities, transport and what the impact of this spend has been. Sport England then collate all these reports from each county in England and compile a report for the ministerial board that the Department for Education and Department of Health sit on. The Ministers annually request information as to how the money they have invested into schools has been spent and what the impact has been. They also require evidence in the form of case studies which is why we have asked schools for these too as we need to send a selection off. They also require us to carry out a review of 30 websites across the county to see if they have uploaded their action plan, stated the amount of funding they have received, and how they are spending this money and what has the impact been.
