Leadership Awards

Who can become a Sports Leader? Anyone can do a Sports Leader Award, as long as they are 9yrs or older and have some get up and go. You don't need to be a sporting superstar to get involved! No qualifications are required to start the course and there are no exams at the end.

What does it involve? Sports Leader Awards get you involved in learning by doing. You actually lead sports and physical activity as a volunteer as part of the course. You learn how to organise and motivate yourself and other people, and improve your communication skills. This can really boost your confidence and help you in work, education and life. A Sports Leader Award is a nationally recognised qualification and can help you get a job or get into further education.

What awards can you do?

If you are aged between 9-13 yrs, the Sports Leaders UK Young Leader Award can aid in learning through being actively involved and sharing out the responsibilities when playing games. You will eventually be able to take on the role of leader. It is appropriate for use in primary and secondary schools as well as sports clubs, uniformed organisations and other community groups.

If you're 14 or over you can do the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership. This is mainly taught in schools as part of PE. It helps you with planning and organising activities and communicating with and motivating other people.

If you're 16 or over you can do the Sports Leaders UK Level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership. This is taught in places like schools, colleges, prisons, youth clubs and leisure centres. It helps you to lead safe sporting activities in your community.

If you're 17 or over, and want to lead groups in the outdoors, there's the Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Basic Expedition Leadership. This Award helps you learn the skills you'll need for organising safe expeditions and camps in lowland areas.

The highest award is the Sports Leaders UK Level 3 Award in Higher Sports Leadership. This builds on the skills you learn in the Sports leaders UK Level 1 Award in Community Sports Leadership. You can start this when you're 17, but you have to be at least 18 when you finish. This Award qualifies you to lead specific groups like older people, people with disabilities or primary school children and you'll learn about event management, first aid, sports development and getting a coaching award.

If you are interested in dance, the Sports Leaders UK Award in Dance Leadership will help you to develop vital skills for life such as planning and organising oneself and others, teamwork, communication and motivation.  The Award can be a stepping-stone to employment, further education or training. Above all, it's a fun course, open to all, that helps people to grow and develop.

As an award designed specifically for Women, Sports Leaders UK Women, Get Set, Go!  ha s been developed by the Women's Sport Foundation, with the support of Sport Leaders UK and Sport England. Women, Get Set, Go! Is a personal development program which is intended to provide a springboard for women into sport or activity leadership, whether as coaches, leaders, administrators or officials.
