Sport Makers

Sport Makers is a two year programme running until March 2013 as part of the People strand of Sport England's Mass Participation Legacy programme Places People Play, announced in late 2010. It is funded by National Lottery Funding through Sport England.

This project will use the inspirational pull of London 2012 to recruit, train and deploy 40,000 new sports volunteers aged 16 years and over to make sport happen across the country over the next two years.

Sport Makers will organise and support hundreds of thousands of new hours of adult participation in grassroots sport, creating new opportunities across the country. Sport Makers will bring the Olympic and Paralympic values to life in every community and will be a highly tangible element of the London 2012 legacy.

In Bedfordshire we are looking to recruit just under 700 new volunteers, termed 'Sport Makers', into sport. These indivuduals will have a positive and inspiring introduction to the world of sports volunteering via a series of workshops delivered locally by a national training provider and in conjunction with team BEDS&LUTON.

In Bedfordshire the process of identifying and recruiting groups of Sport Makers and developing a menu of Sport Makers opportunities has already begun. We are working closely with Volunteer Centres, University of Bedfordshire, NGBs and Community Clubs to identify opportunities to deploy Sport Makers in the areas/sports where the need is greatest. The programme aims to be fully inclusive making a big contribution to increasing sporting opportunities for disabled people.
