Bedfordshire School Games Maker Conference

On 27 November 2017 we had approximately 83 students from local Bedfordshire schools attend this one day event at the University of Bedfordshire and gain a variety of qualifications that can be used in the future.

24 of those students successfully completed a day's Marketing Communications and social media training. Gail Emms was the guest inspirational speaker for the day and the children were tasked with finding out more about her achievements and producing a press release, vlog, social media postings and video. We also asked them to produce some content on what it's like to be a School Games Maker.

Here's the press release they put together about Gail Emms:

Gail Emms, MBE, started her badminton career at the age of four years and shaped her career around the sport and began representing her country in 1995. She professionally represented the country regularly until retirement in 2008. In 1998, she graduated with a BSC in sports science at Kingston University. She competed at the 2004 summer Olympics in woman's doubles and were defeated in the second round.

In 2006, the Commonwealth Games she won a silver medal in the team event, gold in mixed doubles and a bronze in the women's doubles. An additional gold medal followed at the 2006 World Championships.

In the 2008 Summer Olympics she was knocked out in the first round in the women's doubles. In the mixed doubles she won her first match against the Chinese world number 2 pair, they then lost in the quarter finals against the world number 10 double who then went to win gold.

Emms was given an MBE in 2009 at the birthday honours.

After 2008 she began a career in Badminton coaching and motivational speaking and product endorsements, this includes work for Seat cars, EVB sports and Wilson sporting goods.

She has presented and commentated for the BBC, Sky Sports and BT sport. Today Emms visited the Beds & Luton School games conference at the University Of Bedfordshire.
