The "Yes We Can" campaign has grown from an idea, to supporting the provision of six disability sports in Leighton Buzzard in the space of just fifteen months thanks to the Rotary Club of Leighton Linslade. The project has gone from strength to strength and has attracted a number of local partners and sponsors including a £10,500 sponsorship deal for the Buzzards, an inspirations football team for disabled players by local company FAI Autos.
It all started two years ago when Leighton Linslade Rotary Club president Richard Johnson OBE noticed a lack of sports available in the local area for the disabled community. A keen sportsman, Richard and colleagues Nick Inwards & Peter Banwell came up with the idea of creating a football team to include all disabilities. After discussing with fellow members of the Leighton-Linslade Rotary, the "Yes We Can" Disability Sport Initiative was created. The first of the clubs to be set up two years ago was the 'The Buzzards' A dynamic, inclusive football team.
Today the Rotary Club are proud to be involved with the Otters Disability Swimming Club who meet regularly, during term time, from 10.00 - 12.00 on Saturday mornings at Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre.
They also welcomed Disability Bowls to the programme who meet at Leighton Buzzard Bowling Club for fortnightly sessions attended by up to seven disabled players and Spectrum Community Arts who offer a range of one-hour dance workshops for all ages from 4+ to adults at Cedars Upper School and Vandyke Upper School Leighton Buzzard.
Since its debut in October 2017, archery has proved to be extremely popular with everyone enjoying the "fantastic coaching" provided by Jo and Sue at the Silver Arrows Archery Club, Edlesborough. Thanks to a grant awarded in September 2018 by the Whitbread Plc. Chairman's Fund from the Bedfordshire & Luton Community Foundation the "Yes We Can" Disability Sports program can continue to fund another 24 months of disabled archery programmes.
The tennis programme now has weekly sessions at the Linslade Tennis club who are now seeing eight players regularly at each session which is great news for the "Yes We Can" programme. The sessions are run by head coach Sara Bamford who won the Regional Disability Programme of the Year in 2016.
The newest of the sports to join this fantastic initiative is the Leighton Buzzard Hockey Club. They meet on Sundays at Vandyke School, the home of Leighton Buzzard Hockey Club. The sessions take place 12.30 - 1.15 and the youngsters have been enjoying their hockey experience. The club would love to see more attendees - please get in touch with email@example.com for more details. These exciting sports projects are also supported by the Boshier-Hinton Foundation, the Bedfordshire & Luton Community Foundation, Families United Network, Mencap and MK Dons SET.
