Luton & Bedfordshire Community Awards 2019

The Luton Sports Network were delighted to co-sponsor the award for Sporting Achievement at the recent Luton & Bedfordshire Community Awards. Haleema Ali, Graham Simpson and Dale Skeath represented the network at the event.

There were three very worthy finalists for the award. These were as follows:

Amran Malik from Cricket East for his excellent work across Luton developing local youth cricket talent.

Sema Sanin for her passionate and unstinting work with local people to lead happier and healthier lifestyles through improved fitness.

The winners were Queen Bee Bike & Hike Team. In 2018 St Matthews Primary School lost one of their teachers, Emma Kristic, to cancer. Deeply saddened, the school wanted to do something in her memory and so the Bike and Hike Challenge came to be. Six cyclists rode from St John's University in York (where Emma studied) back to Barton-Le-Clay. It was an arduous 182 miles in the saddle in difficult weather conditions.

The whole school got involved, with the children taking part in a cycle to school day too. The initial fundraising target was £5,000 but by the end of the event the total had reached £11,130 which was donated to Macmillan. A terrific effort and a fitting tribute to Emma.

Members of the Hike Team are pictured receiving their award from Luton Sport Networks Haleema Ali and a representative from co-sponsors Ryebridge Construction.
